Every so often, I like to interview my favorite fashion expert, fashion buyer and boutique owner, Heather of The Purple Skirt Boutique to find out what fashions are the most figure flattering. She always shows me some great stuff and this time was no exception. I also visited a new local store that custom makes denim jeans and jackets for both men and women. Plus I found some cool kids lines that are well made and unique. So read on to see my fab fashion finds.
Figure Flattering Finds for Women
A few points about the pant suit -- Pants suits are back and they can be figure flattering if you know what to look for in a good jumpsuit. The one I'm sporting in the segment is made by Veronica M ($115 at The Purple Skirt located at 40th Street and Chandler Blvd in Ahwatukee) and her line truly works to give gals a slender appearance. This one works well because it is a pattern. A jumpsuit in a pattern or a dark color is going slenderize.
The tube top bust is made of a looser material so it doesn't pinch and show that extra skin that can appear under the arm pit area with tighter styles. The waist is gathered and falls nicely over the stomach, so the tummy area is concealed, which means you can wear it out to a nice dinner and eat your meal without worry about post dinner bloat. My kind of dinner attire!
From head to toe the right kind of pant suit, with a good pattern and boussiant waist, can elongate the figure for a comfortable and flattering look. A jacket can be worn over it for day wear and the jacket can be removed and replaced with a statement piece necklace for night wear. For those women who prefer not to show too much neck and chest area skin, the strapless pant suit can still be worn with an attractive statement necklace, which also dresses it up as well. If you want to show more skin in the neck area, wear a long necklace with the pants suit, which further elongates the figure. Add additional flair with a pretty belt. Pant suits are stylish, comfortable and can be dressed up or down by adding or removing accessories. Another benefit of the pant suit that I showed it that is it light weight and doesn't wrinkle, so you can wash and wear it and it makes a great travel outfit that looks nice and stays nice since it won't wrinkle.
A maxi dress done right -- A good maxi dress also gives a slender appearance and Heather showed me one with a ruffle top that flatters both small busted and big busted women. Look for a maxi dress with a pattern that draws the eye upward and away from areas that make us feel self conscious. The Veronica M maxi dress I show in the segment ($115 at The Purple Skirt) has a pretty ruffle that works well for both small and bigger busted women. For smaller gals, simply add a push up bra underneath if you desire more in that area or you can go braless if you want to the thanks to the concealing ruffle. For larger busted women, the ruffle gives a little coverage. And the back of this dress has a fun peek a boo feature. The backside of the ruffle slides together to give complete closure in the back or can be opened to show some skin on the back for a fun night out. See the segment to see me demo this fun feature.
T-shirts for Women -- Heather showed me a butter wash A line t-shirt that sports a fun phrase that says "The World Needs A Group Hug" and we talked about how to find t-shirts that flatter. Look for a V neck that is an A line shape so that when you wear the shirt with denim, it doesn't hug your love handles. It flares out like a flattering A line dress does around your waist. The V-neck directs the eye upward to your face and away from your middle. Who knew that was a right way to wear t-shirts for us gals, too? It makes sense and since tees are so comfy, it is nice to know what to look for in one so that it is slimming, too.
A solution for underneath -- I love to wear tanks underneath my low cut tops and when I want to layer, but I dislike the extra bulk that tank tops add to my middle. Heather has the perfect solution with the half tank that sells for $16 at her store. It works as both a tank top and a sports bra type of top.
Let's Talk Denim
There is a new place in town that you have to know about because they make custom denim to fit your figure just like the celebs wear, but this local shop sells the styles for a lot less than Hollywood's prices. Lawless Denim Co. is located in the very cool CityScape in downtown Phoenix. I recently visited his shop to see how the entire process works and I left impressed and with jeans that fit my every curve just right. The store walls sport a variety of one of a kind types of denim in different stylish colors to boot. Before I met with store owner Roman and his great team to build my custom jeans, I tried on a boyfriend cut that I loved so much, I went ahead and purchased those right off the floor for $67. Not a bad price at all. The store offers a range in pricing because it depends on which custom denim material is selected. Some custom styles can be made for under $150, while others may run a little over $200. It truly depends on what you select. Lawless also makes customized leather pieces as well.
Next it was time for the fun part, to custom design my own pair of jeans that will be made to fit my figure and my curves. To do this, I was measured from waist to heel and the measurements taken are thorough, which I appreciate. Then the team records my measurements on a customized jeans order sheet. It was fun selecting which denim I wanted because they have some unique and high quality raw denim choices to consider. I went for the red and I really like them. Next step was to select my buttons, thread and pocket liner. It was pretty cool to design my own custom jeans from top to bottom. Lawless Denim also has great accessories like belts, bracelets, hats and more. For prices and more information, be sure to check out the Lawless Denim Co website at www.lawlessdenim.com and even better, venture out to the hip and happening store. And watch the segment to see how my custom pieces came out. I love my new custom jeans that fit me like a glove.
Cool Clothing Lines for the Kids
Teen Styles that Give Back -- Check out a cool line called Out of Print. Their website explains that Out of Print celebrates the world’s great stories through fashion. The products feature iconic and often out of print book covers. The line works closely with artists, authors and publishers to license the content that makes up the collection and each product is treated to feel soft and worn like a well-read book. Some of the styles available include "Death Of A Salesman" and "The Great Gatsby" and children's styles like "Goodnight Moon" and "Madeline" are also available. The tees sell for $28 and the best part is that for each product sold, one book is donated to a community in need through their partner Books For Africa. Very cool for kids, teens and adults.
Fun Whimsical Wear for Kids -- Daisy Laing carries classic styles that celebrate warm weather days with designs that sport mermaids, sailors, dragonflies and sea life. Daisy Laing incorporates whimsical embroidery and knits in their collection. Designer, Carolyn Laing, personally creates each and every piece. Each piece is drawn, colored and the embroideries are done in brilliant detail. For prices and information visit the website at www.dailsylaing.com.
Cute Clothing Line Made with Recycled Materials -- Lotty Dotty is a clothing collection of interactive t-shirts and handbags (that double as iPad covers) that was inspired by playing dress up with paper dolls. Founded in 2009 by Shevanne Helmer and Maya Persaud, two American women living in Paris, France, the company has designed and patented a line of high-fashion T-shirts featuring screen printed doll figures, that can be dressed interchangeably with Velcro-backed designer mini-outfits.
I especially like that the company uses organic cotton and recyclable materials as much as possible and is dedicated to aiding women and children issues. Lotty Dotty is tailored to each customer age range and size, there are two types of dolls offered. There are preadolescent (ages 4-10) as well as adult dolls (ages 12-50) that can be dressed and undressed directly on the t-shirt. Additional accessories by Lotty Dotty include leather totes ($120), denim totes ($45), denim clutches ($45), leather clutches ($95), children's backpacks ($45) and canvas totes ($45).
