I was in the grocery store just the other day and found myself behind a woman with a shopping cart literally packed full of gorgeous flowers. I’ll admit to taking a deep sign of envy, wishing my budget would support the pure joy of being able to fill my house with even half those blooms. But, back to reality and to finding some good solutions for most of our Easter tables this year.
So, the good news is that even though bunches and bunches of flowers never go out of style, minimal is IN and, even better, creative containers support the trend.
Simple swap-outs to add whimsy and cut costs
A table “runner” of flowers
Show your style savvy by centering your tablescape with the most current of floral looks – an assortment of flowers down the center of your table or buffet. Think an aisle of flowers instead of the typical one, centered arrangement. You can make fewer flowers go a long way, and look right on trend at the same time.
Shop your cupboards
Use all sorts of containers to hold a stem or two. Think way beyond vases and look to shot glasses, water glasses and bowls. I found the collection of shot glasses at IKEA for $2.99!
Think beyond fresh cut flowers. Instead visit your home store or garden department and pick up a container of growing flowers. A bunch of pansies can look just as beautiful as an expensive bouquet.
Also, even a bouquet of greenery can anchor a table. Keep in mind that a centerpiece doesn’t need to include flowers. If you find a great bunch of greenery – try it as a flower replacement.
And lots of unusual items can spur your imagination like grasses or sticks – allow yourself time to imagine the possibilities.
Here are a couple of the how-to’s you might want to try:
Eggs dyed in beets
4 cups of water
4 cups of chopped beets
1/8 cup of vinegar
Bring water and beets to a boil. When the color is a darkness you desire, remove from heat and let cool a bit. Add the vinegar, mix and add eggs. The eggs can soak up to overnight, depending on the darkness of color that you like.
A great tip for coloring all eggs, even with a store-bought kit is to wipe the eggs with vinegar before coloring – it helps them absorb the color better!
2 cups miniature marshmallows
¼ cup butter
4 cups chow mein noodles
Butter a muffin tin.
Combine marshmallows and butter over medium heat. Stir until both have melted. Stir in the chow mein noodles and stir to coat well. Butter your fingers and press the mixture into the bottom and sides of the prepared tin. Refrigerate until firm. Fun!
