Unfortunately, there comes a time every year when this segment becomes timely and with this season's horrible cold and flu season, that time has arrived again! But this year, I'm taking a different approach. I asked my Mom friends on my Facebook page to share their favorite Mama home remedies and I received some very interesting answers!
So I must tell you that I haven't tested all of these and I'm not medically trained, so the below are ideas that have been shared with me by my gal pals that I thought were interesting to share with you, as we all try to be well!
*Vick's Salve rubbed on feet says my friend, Sharon. She says that doing this and then putting socks on the feet can help a cough. I'm definitely trying this the next time we have a family member coughing in our home.
*Hyland's Cold & Cough 4 Kids - Several moms told me that they really like the Hyland's line of homeopathic cold and cough medicines. They say that Hyland's Cold & Cough 4 Kids really stopped the cough and worked best when combined with Vicks and a cool humidifier. They also like it because they tell me it is works fast and is safe for kids 2 years old and up. Plus, it comes in a great tasting sugar-free base. The Hyland's line is sold at Target, Walgreens and other stores. Learn more about this line at www.hylands.com.
*Honey and cinnamon says my pal, Kelly. But do remember that kids under the age of one should not eat honey. However for older kids and adults, my friend tells me that a teaspoon of honey (raw is best) mixed with a 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon may shorten the duration of a cold. For best results, it is recommended to take this combo, that can be used for a fruit dip for kids or add it to your own hot tea, twice a day for three days. This combination is thought to work because both honey and cinnamon have antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-fungal properties. This is one that I will definitely try in the future.
*Culturelle Probiotic was a popular suggestion that was discussed by my gal pals. My friend, Suzie posted this on my Facebook page. She swears by Culturelle Probiotic and several other moms joined the conversation and stated that they strongly agree that this stuff will really boost your immune system. One capsule gives you significantly more probiotic than a serving of yogurt and it boosts digestion, too. This can be given to kids, as well. This is especially good to take if you find that you have to take antibiotics and my friends also take it daily through cold and flu season to beef up their immune system. I found my box at Sprouts Farmers Market.
*Oil of Oregano for her entire family, says my friend Kim. She says that Oil of Oregano in both liquid and capsule is nature's antibiotic. The wild oregano plant has been shown to kill unwanted bacteria, fungus, yeast, parasites and viruses. It's a powerful antihistamine. New research is finding that oil of oregano is as effective against colitis as prescription drugs without the harmful side effects. It is also able to regenerate liver cells. Kim says that any time her kids start to sniffle or feel rundown, she treats the kids with the liquid. It's totally digestible, but it has a very strong taste, so she rubs on her children's feet before bed, then puts socks on their feet since it is oil. She also does a steamed 'face bath' which means that she fills a bowl full of steamy water, drop 10-12 drops into bowel, cover face with towel and breathe it in. She says that this also works great for allergies and for sinus issues too. When she or her husband feel an illness coming on, they take the capsules. She absolutely swears by it and I've heard this from my Mother, too. Oil of Oregano is sold at Sprouts Farmers Market.
*Zipzicle by Wizco is a great idea because first of all, it was invented by a kid! You gotta love that! For a home remedy, make an all natural juice of your choice into a popsicle for sore throats. The Zipzicle enables parents to make and freeze fruit, juice and other healthy ingredients into a portable popsicle. They come in packages of 12 bags and sell for only $2.99 at www.zipzicles.com. Healthy homemade popsicles can also help hydrate and provide relief for fever and a sore throat.
*Spoonful of Comfort is a great get well gift idea for the millions across the nation catching the dreadful flu virus. The comforting soup is handmade using the freshest of ingredients. It’s prepared in small batches to draw out the best flavors and ensure a superior taste. What’s more, its delivered right to the ill loved ones doorstep, no risky catching germs with a visit! www.spoonfulofcomfort.com. I really love this idea!
*EmergenC and Airborne is what Tonya swears by and I also like EmergenC. My family takes it at the first sign of a cold, plus it gives you a healthy energy boost, too.
*Oscillococcinum is what I show every year and Dr. Theresa Ramsey, NMD a highly regarded naturopathic physician, who appears on our "Your Life A to Z" show every Tuesday agrees that this is good stuff. She told me that Oscillo is effective and safe for everyone, but that it needs to be taken early, before the illness locks into the tissues like pneumonia or a sinus infection. My kids love it because it tastes like candy. Oscillococcinum is now available in a 30-dose value pack—a perfect size for families. Oscillo has no side effects, and has been shown in clinical studies to help reduce both the duration and the severity of flu-like symptoms. It’s safe for everyone ages 2 & up. Oscillo is sold in drug and grocery stores and more information can be found at www.oscillo.com.
*Warm apple juice says my friend, Lisa. She says that this will help with congestion, along with drinking warm liquids and soup. Yep, good ol' chicken noodle soup continues to be a remedy that thrives though the ages and our family believes in that, too.
*NetiPod says my friend, Julie and she swears by this, especially because she is allergic to antibiotics! She says that she has been able to kill many sinus infections with the NetiPod because salt water has natural healing properties and doesn't leave her waking up with hives, like the antibiotics did. The Netipod has been a lifesaver for her and I have heard this from a lot of my gal pals.
*Unpeeled Red Onions! Have any of you ever heard of this? This one surprised me from my friend, Vanessa. She told me that placing unpeeled red onions in bowls around the house may protect everyone from the cold and flu virus. I have not tried this, so I don't know if this works, but Vanessa says it does. Vanessa was told that in 1919 when the flu killed 40 million people, there was a doctor that visited farmers to see if he could help them combat the flu. At that time, many of the farmers and their families had contracted it and many died.
The story continues on to say that the doctor came upon this one farmer and to his surprise, everyone was very healthy. When the doctor asked what the farmer was doing that was different, the wife replied that she had placed an unpeeled onion in a dish in the rooms of the home, (probably only two rooms back then). The doctor couldn't believe it and asked if he could have one of the onions to place under a microscope. He apparently did find the flu virus in the onion. It is believed that the onion absorbed the bacteria, therefore, keeping the family healthy.
Vanessa heard this from her friend who is a hairdresser. The hairdresser said that several years ago, many of her employees were coming down with the flu, and so were many of her customers. The next year she placed several bowls with onions around in her shop. To her surprise, none of her staff got sick. So Vanessa's family did this last year and she says the flu did not visit their home. Interesting, huh?! Again, my disclaimer is that I don't know if this works because I haven't tried it, but I can tell you that I'm going to buy some red onions today!
