March of Dimes - Neural Tube Defects
Neural Tube Defects are birth defects of the spine in which upper or lower portion of spine fails to close. If lower portion of spine does not  close, spina bifida occurs & infant’s legs are paralyzed.  Up to 70% of these defects could be prevented through taking appropriate amount of the B vitamin folic acid, also known as folate, at least 3 months prior to pregnancy. In Arizona, 44% of the babies born are Hispanic.  Hispanic women are at 1.5 to 3 times higher risk than non-Hispanic white women to have a neural tube defect affected pregnancy. Traditional Hispanic diet includes less folic acid enriched products such as flour tortillas, breakfast cereals & more corn products such as corn tortillas which are NOT enriched with folic acid in the United States. Examples of folate rich foods: peanuts, avocados, oranges, black beans. Latina Agent for Change Conference will focus on importance of introducing the B vitamin folic acid into one’s daily diet at an EARLY AGE. The event will enhance folic acid health literacy through providing culinary training to Hispanic high school girls in Maricopa County. Latina Agent For Change Conference will be held on Sat., Aug. 28th from  9am-12pm at the Art Institute of Phoenix located at 2233 W. Dunlap Ave. in Phoenix. Visit www.marchofdimes.com/arizona.
