Homemade Ice Cream

What is more fun in the summer time than making your own Ice cream?  This is a perfect activity for the family.

Supplies
empty coffee can w/ lid -or- 1 gallon Ziploc bag
1 quart Ziploc bag
5 cups ice
1/2 cup rock salt

Ingredients
1 pint milk, half / half, or cream (the higher the milk fat content the creamier the ice cream will be)
1/3 cup sugar
1 tsp. vanilla

Procedure
1. Measure out the ice cream ingredients into the quart size plastic bag and seal tightly. 
2. Place the quart bag inside the coffee can or gallon size bag.
3. Fill remaining space of gallon size bag with as much ice as possible and the 1/2 c rock salt.
4. Seal the gallon bag tightly and begin to shake vigorously for ten to fifteen minutes

The fun part
• you can play follow the leader shaking it high and low
• have a competition to see who can shake the can hardest for 1 minute.
• take turns rolling the can back and forth on the floor. Have a competition to see who can roll the can the farthest across the room.
• set up empty 2-liter bottles like bowling pins. Have a bowling game, where the kids must roll the can into the pins. If several children are present, have them gather in a circle. Start music, like musical chairs, and have each kid shake the can five times and pass it to his neighbor. Whoever is shaking the can when you stop the music has to leave the circle. Continue playing until one player wins.

The yummy part
Now it is time to enjoy your delicious hard work!

Alternative Ice Cream flavor
Any of these recipes can be substituted with rice/almond/soy milk and agave nectar or stevia for a healthier alternative!

Egg Nog
Add 1 tablespoon brandy and 1 tablespoon rum. Dash nutmeg!

Cinnamon Stick Ice Cream
1 pint of Half & Half
½ tsp cinnamon
1 tsp vanilla
1/3 cup sugar plus 2 tbs

Ginger Ice Cream
1 pint of Half & Half
2-3 tbs crystallized or candied ginger, finely chopped
1 tsp vanilla
1/3 cup sugar plus 2 tbs

Strawberry
1 pint of Half & Half
3 Tablespoons of Strawberry Jam
1/3 cup sugar
*If desired add a touch of balsamic for an exotic twist

Cookies And Cream
Add ½ cup (about 8) crumbled chocolate cookies.

Hot Cocoa Ice Cream
Mix 2 to 3 packets of hot cocoa mix with half and half in a container. Shake well, add marshmallows if on hand.
