It’s rare for a television journalist to pull off his first live report before he has even graduated high school, but that’s exactly how 3TV anchor and reporter Steve Ryan got hooked on news.

It happened during the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, when the bomb went off in Centennial Park. Law enforcement cordoned off every building, so Ryan, a production assistant with The Associated Press, was asked to do the live shot for a reporter who was not allowed upstairs.

Ryan didn’t get the opportunity to do another live report until after he graduated Elon University in North Carolina a few years later.

He took his first full-time on-air job in Wilmington, N.C. Ryan has also done stints at CNN in Atlanta, along with a handful of other news operations around the country.

His most recent stop before coming to 3TV in May 2011 was in Las Vegas. He covered several notable stories there, including the arrest and conviction of O.J. Simpson for robbery and kidnapping, the shootings of seven people at New York-New York casino, and the fire on the top floors of the Monte Carlo.

He has covered numerous other memorable stories, including the explosion of Space Shuttle Columbia, Hurricane Katrina, and the trial of Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis.

Ryan was born in New York City but grew up mostly in Atlanta. He has also lived overseas, much in part because he hails from a news family. Both of his parents were network journalists. He has several other family members who have worked at the network and local level, so news is in his blood.

The outdoors is also in Ryan’s blood. He’s an avid SCUBA diver, skier, camper, hiker, boater and traveler. He even tries to take his two dogs on as many of those adventures as possible.

Ryan is also a car enthusiast. His last project was restoring a 1968 Ford Mustang.

You can find Ryan anchoring 3TV’s evening shows on weekends and reporting several days each week. If you’ve got any story ideas that you want to run by him, feel free to drop him a line 24-7 at sryan@azfamily.com.
