SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) — Authorities in Chile are keeping 16 suspects in jail while they investigate an alleged child prostitution ring.
Police say the gang was led by four women who forced girls between ages 15 and 17 to prostitute themselves. A judge ruled Tuesday that the women and 12 alleged clients can be held pending an investigation.
Among the purported clients ordered held are 83-year-old Guido Vallejos, head of the Chilean children's magazine Barrabases, and 69-year-old Jaime Roman, a well-known former musical producer for state TV.
Defense lawyers say their clients didn't know the prostitutes were minors and therefore never realized they were committing a crime.
Judge Santiago Varas ordered them held during a 90-day investigation.
