MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexican navy personnel say they have found a radio communications network operated by a drug cartel, complete with a 300-foot (90-meter) transmission tower.

The navy says the radio equipment and several towers were found in the Gulf coast state of Veracruz. The system reached into the neighboring state of Tamaulipas.

The navy says the system was detected last week and marines moved in to dismantle it.

Friday's statement does not say which cartel had operated the system. But the Gulf cartel and the Zetas gang operate in the area and have been known to operate such sophisticated communications systems.
