KARACHI, Pakistan (AP) — Factory fires in two of Pakistan's major cities today have left 39 people dead, and dozens more injured.
The first fire swept through a shoe factory in the eastern city of Lahore. Police say 25 people were killed in the fire, which began when sparks from a generator made contact with chemicals that were used to make shoes. People had been trying to start the generator after power went out in the area.
Firefighters had to break holes in the solid brick walled buildings to reach victims inside.
The second blaze erupted in the southern port city of Karachi. A hospital official says at least 14 people were killed and more than 40 were hurt when the fire broke out at a garment factory.
Many of the injured workers were hurt when they jumped from the burning building.
