SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — A pediatrician in Puerto Rico who killed a friend of his slain son in a revenge plot has been sentenced to prison.
Dr. Antoliano Torres Rodriguez was sentenced to 60 years by a judge in the suburb of Bayamon for second-degree murder, attempted murder and weapons violations.
The 65-year-old pediatrician fatally shot Emmanual Diaz Chavez and wounded another man in January 2011. Authorities say he attacked them because the men were with his 24-year-old son when he was shot and killed a month earlier and the doctor believed they were not cooperating with police to solve the case.
The doctor's lawyer argued for a lesser sentence Thursday, saying Torres is still suffering emotionally from the loss of his son and has a 40-year medical career.
