JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — Efforts to save a beached whale in Indonesia are being thwarted by hordes of spectators and some may have climbed on the creature.
One of the rescuers said the 12-meter (39-foot) giant sperm whale washed ashore Wednesday near West Java's Krawang beach and attracted hundreds of onlookers who posed for pictures with it. Rescuers tried to lead the whale to sea Thursday, but it washed back to shore after fishing boats packed with paying passengers blocked it from swimming.
Pramudya Harzani from the Jakarta Animal Aid Network said Friday that the whale was dying. He said the whale was scratched and bruised, apparently from people climbing on it.
Police are trying to keep people away while waiting for a ship to pull the whale back to sea.
