KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — An Afghan police official says five American soldiers have been wounded in a shooting attack by a man in an Afghan army uniform.

The official says the man opened fire outside a NATO base in eastern Afghanistan.

The number of insider attacks against foreign forces in Afghanistan has increased this year -- undermining the trust between allies, amid efforts to prepare Afghan troops to take over their own security.

A witness to today's attack said Afghan civilians were talking to the soldiers outside their base when a man in an Afghan army uniform opened fire on them with a machine gun.

It happened in a province that is close to the capital, but is considered a Taliban hotbed. It has been the scene of heavy fighting over the past year.
