PHOENIX – A two-car wreck closed a portion of Carefree Highway between Seventh and 23rd avenues Wednesday morning.
It happened at about 12:40 a.m.
According to Sgt. Tommy Thompson of the Phoenix Police Department, a 39-year-old woman in a 2005 Mitsubishi was driving west in the eastbound lanes of the divided roadway. That Mitsubishi collided with a 2005 Kia Spectra driven by a 22-year-old woman.
The woman in the Kia reportedly suffered life-threatening injuries and was air-lifted to a local hospital. She was in extremely critical condition at last check.
The woman in the Mitsubishi suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries.
Police have not released the names of the women.
According to Thompson, investigators believe alcohol was a factor in the wreck.
Aerial video from the scene showed the badly mangled cars with debris scattered all over the roadway. While the accident happened in the eastbound lanes of the Carefree Highway, the westbound lanes were blocked by the wreckage.
Thompson said the closure would likely remain in place until at least noon.
Westbound drivers were being advised to take Seventh Street north to Desert Hills and then Desert Hills to 27th Avenue. From there they can get back on the Carefree Highway. Eastbound drivers should do the opposite – 27th Avenue to Desert Hills to Seventh Street and then back to the Carefree Highway.
