TUCSON, Ariz. -- Born and raised in Arizona, Rep. Gabrielle Giffords is a third-generation Southern Arizonan.
Giffords, known as Gabby to most, was first elected to Congress amid a wave of Democratic victories in the 2006 election, and has been mentioned as a possible Senate candidate in 2012 and a gubernatorial prospect in 2014.
The congresswoman has hosted "Congress on Your Corner" events like the one Saturday since she took office.
"I like to roll my sleeves up and really get one-on-one with people, have a real chance to solve problems," Giffords told 3TV at a "Congress on Your Corner" event in Sierra Vista a few years ago.
Giffords is married to Capt. Mark E. Kelly, a Navy pilot, a veteran of Desert Storm, and a NASA astronaut who has piloted space shuttles Endeavour and Discovery. The two met in China in 2003 while they were serving on a committee there, and were married in January 2007.
Mike Watkiss runs down Giffords' background and her history of public service.
