JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — The municipality of Juneau is deciding where it will install a half-dozen public ports for charging electric cars.

The Juneau Empire (http://bit.ly/15pGsFH) reports the municipality and the Juneau Community Foundation have been awarded a $25,000 Bloomberg Award for charging stations.

Local organizations and businesses will match the grant.

Alec Mesdag of Alaska Electric Light & Power Co. says the use of all-electric cars is increasing. The utility offers a reduced rate on kilowatt hours for people who charge electric cars at night.

Mesdag says eight of the program's 10 available slots are filled and six owners enrolled in the last six weeks.

Mesdag says potential locations for charging ports include the city parking garage, Eaglecrest Ski Area and other places where people will park for hours.
