GLENDALE -- In a tradition that goes back 17 years, a Glendale florist is giving away thousands of roses in an effort to put smiles on people's faces.

3TV's Javier Soto on Tuesday introduced us to Judy Haenel of The Tulip Tree. She's the force behind Pass It On day, a simple concept with profound impact on many.

Haenel is giving away bouquets of a dozen roses to anyone who asks today. But, of course, there's a catch -- a good one. You keep one rose for yourself and give away the other 11, each to a different person. It's a simple gesture, but one that's guaranteed make the recipients smile.

With its origins going back before the Sept. 11 attacks changed our world, Pass It On Day did not always coincide with what has become a national day of remembrance.

As Haenel explained, it used to be on the second Wednesday of September. In 2002, the year after the 9/11 terror attacks, the second Wednesday of September fell on Sept. 11. A light bulb lit in Haenel's head and she decided Pass It On Day should always be on Sept. 11.

"It would become a whole lot more meaningful that just saying 'thank you' to people," she explained.

The Tulip Tree has 4,000 roses to give away for Pass It On Day. They will be handed out on a first-come, first-served basis. People lined up early to start picking the free roses and spreading smiles.

The Tulip Tree is located at 5933 W. Bell Road. For more information, call 602-978-3097.
