PHOENIX -- A driver going the wrong way on the Loop 101 in North Phoenix ran into a motorcyclist, killing him, according to investigators.
The crash happened at 32nd street and the Loop 101 on Sunday afternoon.
Officials with the Arizona Department of Public Safety said the female motorist may have gotten on the off-ramp at Tatum and the 101 freeway, heading westbound in the eastbound lanes.
The unidentified woman allegedly crashed into two motorcyclists, while another rider with the group managed to swerve out of the way.
"From where we got the initial call to where it turned into an actual collision was 30 seconds," says Ofc. Robert Hicks with DPS.
"We were in the backyard hanging out by the pool...we heard a large double bang...like the big metal trash cans you hear from the dumpsters like when they hit them," said Jason Bracke whose home backs up to the freeway.
Three people were taken to John C. Lincoln Hospital, where one rider died from his injuries. Another suffered serious injuries but is expected to survive. The third motorcyclist was not hurt.
The female driver suffered minor injuries.
Investigators are looking into whether alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.
Eastbound traffic was diverted at 7th street for much of the evening while investigators gathered evidence.
