EL MIRAGE, Ariz. -- A robbery caught on tape in El Mirage.
“It's on Dysart Road in El Mirage, called the Smoke Away smoke shop,” said Sgt. Darren Burch.
Sgt. Burch said three Hispanic men, believed to be in their mid 20s, entered the empty store on the evening of Oct. 27. One grabs the clerk's attention while the other two make their moves.
Surveillance video catches one man stretching over the counter and snatching up a handful of the psychoactive designer drug commonly known as "spice."
“One of the suspects has a very distinctive tattoo that runs up both sides of his neck to his chin, some type of wording or writing, not sure what it is, but it's very distinctive,” said Sgt. Burch.
Once the clerk saw what was happening she went after the suspects, and the guys bolted.
“She's able to grab one of them, but he throws her down to the ground very roughly, to the extent where she has contusions and bruises and is taken to the hospital and is in good condition and is released,” said Sgt. Burch.
With that act of violence, Sgt. Burch said this shoplifting crime elevated from a misdemeanor to a felony robbery.
“By definition that means imprisonment in a state penitentiary,” said Sgt. Burch.
