GLENDALE, Ariz. -- A vehicle hit the back of a bus, struck a pedestrian and crashed through a block fence in Glendale Monday morning.

Police said an SUV clipped the back of a Valley Metro bus that was unloading passengers at Cholla Street and 59th Avenue at about 9:30 a.m.

Sgt. Brent Coombs said the vehicle then went up onto the sidewalk where it struck a woman who had just gotten off the bus with her 4-year-old son. The vehicle continued through a block fence and ended up in the backyard of a home.

Witnesses said the mother pushed the boy out of the way so he would not get hit.

The woman was transported to a local hospital. Her injuries were not life-threatening. As a precaution, family members took the boy to a hospital to be evaluated. Coombs said the child did not appear to be injured, but he was shaken up.

The driver was not hurt.

"It could have been much worse," Coombs said. "We could have had more people that had just gotten off the bus and it could have involved the 4-year-old to a much greater extent than it did."

The resident of the home said she was sitting on her couch watching TV when she heard the crash.

"I knew what happened because the first time it happened I heard it, it was the same noise," Lisa Givans said.

Givans has lived in the home for five years and said this was second time a vehicle crashed into her yard. In the incident last year, a vehicle actually continued through the house.
