TEMPE, Ariz.-- ASU’s Sparky is getting another Makeover

If the Devil really is in the details, then ASU has a lot of work to do.

“I like the old Sparky!” says one student when prompted with a picture comparing the two most recent mascots for Arizona State.

Walking around the ASU campus, it’s hard to find a student who actually likes the new version of Sparky, which was unveiled on March 1.

Here are a few of the comments we got today:

“I think he makes ASU look a little weaker.”

“I think the new Sparky looks like a beetle and is really, really, creepy.”

“He looks like Jafar from Aladdin.”

“He is not fierce”

Similar opinions were voiced to the higher-ups at Arizona State and now they are re-building the mascot.

Now fans get to decide how he will look.

According to the university, people will get to vote in an online poll.

Voters will choose, ”between maroon and black horns, different sizes and shapes for the eyes, face shape choices that include a less prominent chin, and options for the mustache and goatee.”

ASU also promises, “All features offered will be consistent with the identity of Sparky.”

The latest version of Sparky was designed with the help of Disney. The plan was to use the revamped devil in cartoons and comic books aimed at a younger demographic.

Arizona State will not change the Sparky logo you see on hats and other merchandise.

The voting will run between April 22 and May 5.

ASU plans to reveal the fans' choice for the costume on Sept. 5, 2013, at the first football game of the season.

Sure, ASU students and fans seem resident to change when it comes to their beloved mascot. But it’s not the first time they have had to deal with it. Sparky’s costume has been updated several times since 1946, when Disney artist, Berk Anthony, drew the original Sun Devil. And when looking at the 1977 version change is good.
