HOUSTON, Texas -- US Airways Flight 500 was going to leave Los Angeles Monday afternoon with or without Ben Rose on board.
"My sister was somehow able to speed and get me to the airport with 35 minutes to go," Rose said. "I ran through security and caught my flight. I never thought I'd catch my flight."
But he did, and on the short ride to Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport, he says he stepped in to stop a man who was trying to run down a flight attendant.
'What actually happened is there's a guy who had grabbed the food cart and he was slamming the food cart down the passenger way," Rose said. "So I shot up and i said, hey (expletive), I'm not going to take this. You know, I'm not going to let you do this to us...you know, the guy was trying to bring down a flight."
Rose says, in the moment, he feared the worst, so he did what he thought he had to do.
"He took a swing at me and I was able to duck, he clocked me in the back of the head," said Rose. "It didn't hurt, and I was able to swing around to get on the other side of him and I was able to help tackle him."
His guess for a motive? Rose says the suspect kept yelling about an issue in his family.
"It was just a regular guy that snapped. He had blue eyes; he was crying. I don't ever think I'll get his face out of my mind," said Rose. "I couldn't sleep last night."
And he'll never forget their last exchange in an FBI holding room.
"He asked me when is it going to get better for me? And I told him when you stop feeling sorry for yourself and when you turn to God," Rose said. "And then after that he didn't say a thing to me the rest of the time."
The suspect is now in federal custody. It will be up to the U.S. Attorney's office to bring charges against him within 48 hours after his arrest.
