PHOENIX -- Maricopa County sheriff's deputies and the Civil Air Patrol are searching a remote area of the desert for a missing California man who has Alzheimer's disease and diabetes.
Dennis Elkins, 64, called deputies on Monday, saying he was lost near the White Tank Mountains. The cell phone signal was weak, so he left his car to find high ground and hasn't been heard from since.
Deputies immediately began searching with SUVs, ATVs and on foot. Shortly after, they enlisted the help of the Civil Air Patrol. Officials have numerous aircraft searching now, including helicopters and a special plane from New Mexico that's equipped with electronic mapping software.
Elkins was passing through Arizona in a green Toyota on his way to Nevada.
