PHOENIX -- The ladies are just a few days away from teeing up for the 54-hole RR Donnelley LPGA Founders Cup at JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort.
A field of 132 golfers from all over the country will be playing this weekend. Dozens of players have already arrived, but crews are still hard at work to make sure everything is shipshape.
Tess Rafols learned exactly what goes in to getting a golf course ready for a tournament like this when she talked to John Wright, the director of Golf at the Wildfire Golf Club in Phoenix, Tuesday morning.
"We've been working on the event for about nine weeks now," he said.
A team of 36 is working on the grounds practically around the clock.
"The guys get here at 5 in the morning and work all day," Wright said. "We get them back out here in the afternoon and they do everything all over again."
The RR Donnelley LPGA Founders Cup, which is returning to the Valley after a year off, is March 18-20.
"Hopefully, it will be a permanent stop on the LPGA tour," Wright said.
The pro-am is Thursday, followed by three rounds of tournament play on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
Tickets are available by phone (1-888-LPGATIX) or online at www.LPGAFounders.com, and at the PGA stores in Scottsdale and Chandler.
