TAMPA, Fla. -- Gov. Jan Brewer accused Democrats of waging class war and a war on women, during a national television interview over the weekend.

Brewer, who is in Tampa, Fla., for the Republican National Convention, made the comments Sunday on NBC's Meet the Press.

She was asked about Missouri Congressman Todd Akin, who is a Republican, who claimed last week that women couldn't get pregnant in cases of "legitimate rape."

Brewer said Akin's views don't represent the Republican Party and accused Democrats of trying to use his remarks to score political points.

“Democrats have certainly tried to wage a war against women... class warfare," Brewer said. "The bottom line is Republicans have rejected Atkins (sic) statement... Gov. Romney has rejected that statement, as have I."

Since Akin’s comments were first reported last week, many political pundits have questioned whether it could hurt the GOP’s efforts to court women voters this year.

Brewer insisted that the GOP is, "the party of women" and has been very supportive of female candidates across the country.

"We have been really, really good to woman candidates, you look at just governors alone, we've got more women governors, Republican governors than Democratic governors," Brewer said.

She also added: "We believe in life, that is true, but we have been very open and supportive of women and the women’s issues."

Brewer is scheduled to be at the convention for most of the week. The governor’s office is not releasing which events she will be attending while in Florida.
