PHOENIX (AP) -- Polls now are closed in southern Arizona's 8th Congressional District as voters decide who will face former Gabrielle Giffords aide Ron Barber in a special election to replace the wounded ex-congresswoman.
The polls closed at 7 p.m. Tuesday. There's no word yet on voter turnout. The 8th District has nearly 425,000 registered voters.
Four Republican candidates are battling in a special primary election called after Giffords resigned in January to focus on recovering from a gunshot wound.
Giffords tapped her aide as her preferred replacement. Barber has drawn strong financial support and no challengers in his Democratic Party's primary.
That leaves the GOP foursome -- Jesse Kelly, state Sen. Frank Antenori, Martha McSally and Dave Sitton -- to battle in the special primary election. The general election is June 12.
