MESA, Ariz. (AP) -- A charter school executive from Mesa is expected to make an announcement Tuesday on whether he will challenge state Senate President Russell Pearce in a Nov. 8 recall election.
Jerry Lewis has said he has been approached by people who want him to run against Pearce.
Pearce is known as the Legislature's staunchest advocate for tougher immigration laws.
He was the driving force behind several immigration laws, including the state's immigration enforcement law that was passed last year.
Recall organizers have been critical of Pearce's immigration stances and say he has failed to focus on important issues such as protecting public education and ensuring access to health care.
Pearce says he strives to promote schools, economic growth, job creation, balanced budgets, strong law enforcement and secure borders.
