DENVER (AP) — The newly competitive Senate race in Colorado is becoming a contest to define the Republican contender, congressman Cory Gardner.

Gardner made a last-minute entry into the contest to challenge Democratic Sen. Mark Udall and has been busy ever since trying to raise money and assemble a campaign team.

Meanwhile, Udall and his Democratic allies aren't wasting a minute to warn voters that Gardner is too extreme to represent a moderate state like Colorado.

Gardner's supporters have struck back. They're accusing Udall of rubber-stamping President Barack Obama's agenda and blaming him for the troubled health care overhaul. Polls show Udall is vulnerable.

Democrats are struggling to hold onto their Senate majority amid voter discontent. Republicans need to net six seats in November to win control of the chamber.
