LONDON (AP) — Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling has expressed "alarm and dismay" at Prime Minister David Cameron's response to a report on press wrongdoing in Britain.

Rowling was writing in support of Lord Justice Brian Leveson's recommendations published Thursday, which proposed that the press should be regulated by an independent body enshrined in law.

But Cameron, along with newspaper editors, expressed misgivings about the proposals, saying setting down new laws about a press regulator could infringe on the independence of Britain's press.

Rowling gave evidence last year about press intrusion into her family's privacy during an inquiry that preceded the report. She had told of how journalists had driven her out of her home and targeted her 5-year-old daughter at school.
