PHOENIX -- Back-to-school means a new backpack for many kids. Do you know how to pick the right one? It's not just about looks.

If a backpack is too big or overloaded, it can cause your child some serious back pain.

Dr. Michael Chang of the Sonoran Spine Center showed Kaley O'Kelley some of the dos and don'ts.

He said that over-the-shoulder bag, while popular, are not a good idea because the weight is not distributed evenly.

Two more common issues are backpacks that are overstuffed or simply not work correctly.

The proper way to wear a backpack is to wear it on both shoulders and actually use the belt around the waist.
