PHOENIX -- It was a good deed for a pair of mourning families.
"They're young and have families and so I can relate to them," said Michele Webb, who arrived at Danny's Family Car Wash to help. "I just got finished hiking with my dog and we decided we would stop by and help out the families of the firefighter and police officer that were killed."
A basic wash at the Tatum Boulevard and Cactus Road location is free with donations until 2 p.m. All the money raised will go to the families of Phoenix firefighter Brad Harper and Phoenix police Officer Daryl Raetz. Both men were killed in the line of duty and died within hours of each other on May 19.
Danny's Family Car Wash has offered free car washes for the families of fallen officers for more than 15 years. Danny Hendon, the owner, used to be a police officer in Detroit.
"We do this every time for officers," Hendon said. "Their job is hard, and it's difficult when they're taken from their family."
"We wanted to get involved and we wanted to give the community an outlet to come out and participate and donate to support these families," Heather Hendon said.
Local vendors also donated drinks and snacks, which were available next to the car pickup. Even the Chick-fil-A cow made an appearance dressed in a firefighter's uniform.
"It's for a good cause," said Josh Henderson, a police deputy. "We're all brothers."
Those drivers who didn't have time for a car wash could do a drive-thru donation on the street. Deputies with the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office and others volunteered their time holding donation buckets.
