PHOENIX -- One person is in the hospital and a second is behind bars after a party ended in a shooting.
The victim was discovered during a traffic stop. When an officer walked up to speak to the driver, he saw that the car was riddled with bullet holes and the man in the passenger seat had been shot several times.
According to Officer James Holmes of the Phoenix Police Department, it all started Sunday night with an argument between two men -- a 28-year-old and a 23-year-old.
The suspect, Jesse Soto, 23, allegedly fired several rounds into the windshield of a car, hitting the victim several times. A 26-year-old woman and a 7-year-old were in the car when Soto allegedly opened fire. Neither one of them was hurt.
The victim, whose name has not been released, chased Soto, but did not catch him, Holmes said.
That's when the woman drove the victim away from the scene. An officer pulled her over after she reportedly ran a red light at Central Avenue and Broadway Road, about 2 miles from the home where the shooting took place.
Holmes said the victim was not cooperative with police, but the woman told officers that Soto opened fired on them as they left a party at a home in the area of Seventh Street south of Southern Avenue.
While detectives are still piecing together the minutes and hours leading up to the shooting, Holmes said officers arrested Soto in the backyard of the house.
Police booked Soto on suspicion of aggravated assault. According to court paperwork, Soto has a criminal history. He pleaded guilty in armed robbery in 2009.
The victim was taken to a local hospital and is expected to survive.
At this point, detectives are not sure what sparked the initial argument nor have they confirmed the relationship between Soto and the victim. They also have not released the connection between the victim and the woman and child who were with him at the time of the shooting.
