PHOENIX -- A man is dead and his wife is in the hospital after it seems a domestic dispute escalated into a double stabbing at a Phoenix home Tuesday morning.
Police received a 911 call around 5:30 a.m. and arrived to find a woman with more than a dozen stab wounds outside a home near 69th Avenue and Osborn Road. Officers entered the home and found a man with multiple stab wounds, as well.
The man died. He has been identified as Joel Burgos, 48. His 33-year-old wife is recovering at a local hospital. She was able to speak with police detectives.
Police spokesman Sgt. Trent Crump said it appears that the couple had been arguing last night.
"The female has been alleging … that she was awoken by being stabbed by her husband," Crump said. "She has also indicated that his injuries were then self-inflicted once she got out of the home."
Three kids ages 4 to 13 were in the home at the time and police believe at least one of them witnessed what happened. Four other kids were in a detached garage, which has been turned into a makeshift apartment for another family.
No one else was injured.
