GILBERT -- The town of Gilbert is wrapping up its month-long food drive, and on Monday's Good Morning Arizona, 3TV's Ryan O'Donnell was there for the final weigh-in.

The goal was to raise 50,000 meals for the hungry. Bob Evans of United Food Bank says the food will go back to the town of Gilbert. "The food is collected here, will go to our facility, but will then come back to Gilbert to the folks here who need it," he says.

Some of the donated food may even go to tornado victims in Oklahoma. "We work with Feeding America, with which we're a partner agency," Evans says. "We keep food in reserve, and when it's asked for, we'll send it."

Turns out the food drive met and exceeded its goal! The total weight was 6,580 lbs. of donated food, tipping the scales and surpassing expectations. The effort also brought in some $9,000 in cash donations.

"This is one of those great events in the town where we can bring everyone together, create a fantastic event, and in turn help our neighbors," says Jenn Daniels of the Gilbert Town Council. "And that is what Gilbert is all about."

If you'd still like to donate food or money to the United Food Bank, you can do so at any time. Visit the agency's website or call 480-926-4897.
