PHOENIX (AP) — The families of two women involved in a rollover crash in Arizona have learned that authorities mixed up the names of one victim who died and another who was hospitalized.
All last week, friends stood vigil outside a Phoenix hospital room thinking 21-year-old Marlena Cantu was in critical condition. At the same time, they mourned 19-year-old Abby Guerra, who they thought had died in the same car crash last Sunday.
Teammates from Guerra's University of Evansville soccer team in Indiana were expected to fly to Phoenix for a Monday funeral.
Chaos erupted Saturday when family and friends learned it was actually Cantu who died and that Guerra was in the hospital with severe injuries.
An Arizona Department of Public Safety spokesperson wasn't available to explain how people were identified at the crash scene.
