FARGO, N.D. (AP) — The flooding's not expected to be as bad this year, but communities along the Red River are ready just in case.
Volunteers in North Dakota continue to fill sandbags, and contractors have built clay levees to protect homes from the fast-rising river's waters. At last count, well over 400,000 sandbags, each weighing about 20 pounds, have been delivered to the area.
The Red River is expected to crest at about 20 feet on Sunday near Fargo, North Dakota and the neighboring city of Moorhead, Minnesota.
Last year, about 100 homes in the area were damaged and thousands of people were evacuated after the Red River rose above the flood stage for a record 61 days and crested twice.
