NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Authorities say a registered sex offender who was apprehended while driving through Louisiana with a missing Florida teen will face attempted murder and other charges.

Officials say 41-year-old Steven Myers of Plant City, Florida, was arrested late Wednesday after a 40-mile chase across Louisiana swampland. Cpl. Paul Mouton of the Lafayette City Police Department says Myers was in a hospital Thursday in serious but stable condition, with charges pending.

Officers used a stun gun to subdue Myers after he exited the vehicle with a knife. He and the girl, missing since last week from Valrico in the Tampa Bay area, both had stab wounds. She also was in serious but stable condition.

Mouton says investigators believe but haven't confirmed that Myers stabbed the girl and then himself.

Myers was found guilty of child molestation in March 1999 in Forsyth County, Ga.
