NEW YORK (AP) — Federal authorities say they arrested a jail guard supervisor accused of ignoring a dying Rikers Island inmate in 2012.
U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara in Manhattan announced Monday that Terrence Pendergrass is charged with violating the prisoner's rights.
The man was in a mental health unit after suicide attempts, including swallowing a battery.
Authorities say that on Aug. 18, 2012, two correction officers and a pharmacy technician became concerned because the inmate appeared ill and said he'd swallowed a caustic cleaning agent. They allege Pendergrass ignored both officers' attempts to get help for the man.
Other inmates later told the FBI that the dying man had been banging on his cell door, spitting up blood and screaming for help.
Pendergrass' attorney did not immediately respond to comment requests.
