PITTSBURGH (AP) — A first-time mother who says she failed a drug test while in labor because she ate poppy seeds is suing a Pittsburgh hospital and says officials defamed her and violated her doctor-patient confidentiality by sharing the results with a child welfare agency.

The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center isn't commenting on the lawsuit filed Tuesday by Rachael Devore. The Allegheny County woman gave birth at Magee-Women's Hospital of UPMC in June.

The lawsuit contends the hospital staff took Devore's urine for testing while she was in labor, then turned over the "positive" drug test to county caseworkers who eventually inspected Devore's home, and referred her to a substance abuse counselor.

Opiates like heroin are made from poppies, which is why the seeds can result in false positives on drug tests.
