LOS ANGELES (AP) — Two reputed Los Angeles gang members have been charged with robbing and killing a man police say was lured to his death with a Craigslist ad.
Seventeen-year-old Ryan Roth and 18-year-old Markell Thomas were charged Monday in the Oct. 19 shooting of Rene Balbuena, who was gunned down in front of his 15-year-old son. Both were arrested last week.
Authorities say Balbuena and his son drove to a South Los Angeles location at night to buy a cellphone listed on Craigslist, but instead two people confronted them and demanded money. Balbuena was shot several times and his son was grazed but the robbers fled empty-handed.
Investigators are trying to determine whether the two are connected with seven similar holdups in Southern California. No one was injured in those holdups.
