SAN DIEGO (AP) — A final report on a 2009 collision in San Diego Harbor says failure by a Coast Guard boat operator to drive his craft safely led to the crash and subsequent death of an 8-year-old boy.
The report released Thursday night by the Coast Guard also cites failures of the crew and commanders at the guard's San Diego station, but places primary blame on the boat's driver, Petty Officer 3rd Class Paul Ramos.
Ramos was at the controls of the fast-moving boat on Dec. 20, 2009 during the San Diego Parade of Lights when it rammed into a pleasure boat in the harbor for the holiday festival.
Eight-year-old Anthony DeWeese was killed and 10 others injured.
Ramos was sentenced in 2010 to three months in the brig for dereliction of duty.
