MIAMI (AP) — Miami's police chief is cracking down on officers who speed while off duty.
Chief Manuel Orosa announced Monday that he's taking action against 36 officers.
The South Florida Sun Sentinel (http://sunsent.nl/KaE6Wl ) reports that the first wave of disciplinary action includes an officer who made headlines after leading a state trooper on a high-speed chase through Broward County in October. The officer is being suspended for a month and will lose his take-home car for three months.
Other officers face punishments that include formal reprimands, suspensions and loss of vehicle privileges. Orosa says he plans to fire at least one officer identified as a habitual speeder and is equipping 40 police vehicles with GPS devices to make sure the worst offenders slow down.
