PHOENIX -- YMCAs located throughout the Valley are collecting phones, TVs, and other electronics that you don’t need anymore as part of their "Unplug and Reconnect" campaign.

The technology will be recycled and distributed to people in the community who may not be able to purchase certain electronics and are in need of them.

“Valley of the Sun YMCA is really happy to be a community agency, and we want to highlight our social responsibility pillar and really emphasize community partnerships in unity,” said April Lewallen, executive director of the Chris-Town YMCA.

Valley YMCAs are working with Westech Recyclers, a local recycling firm that will refurbish the electronics and distribute them to schools and smaller, non-profit agencies.

Items that may be donated include a variety of electronics, but they must work. The campaign says donations can be used, but must be useful.

Unplug and Reconnect also focuses on the importance of people unplugging their electronics and reconnecting with their families. It may be difficult to step away from electronics when technology is so present today, but it is important to continue having actual conversations or to get outdoors with family, Lewallen said.

At the Lincoln Family Downtown YMCA, located in downtown Phoenix, a current member donated a semi-truck full of electronics from his house.

“We’re really fortunate to have members in our community that want to donate,” Lewallen said.

If you are not a YMCA member and make a donation, you receive $75 off a family membership at the gym.

Unplug and Reconnect runs through September 30 at all Valley of the Sun YMCA locations.
