TEMPE, Ariz. -- It was a scary night for bus riders in Tempe when a car went careening into the side of a Valley Metro bus right around 6 p.m. Sunday.
The crash happened at the intersection of Priest Drive and Baseline Road.
Several people were hurt and had to be rushed to the hospital.
Police said the driver of a Chevy Camaro tried taking the corner going more than 45 miles per hour. He couldn’t hold the turn and lost control, hitting the median and launching into the bus.
One person in the Camaro wasn’t wearing his seat belt and was ejected from the car. Another person in the Camaro had to be pried out with the Jaws of Life.
Witnesses who ran to help the people in the car said there were beer cans littered around the vehicle and police confirmed that the driver was drunk.
All three people in the car were taken to the hospital along with three people on the bus, including the driver. All had minor injuries except for the driver of the Camaro, who was seriously hurt but expected to survive.
