PHOENIX -- Phoenix police officers were called to the Walmart near 51st Avenue and Indian School Road in Maryvale for a shoplifting call Saturday.

Sgt. Trent Crump said the shoplifting suspect had a knife and was opening packages in the store.

When several officers confronted the suspect in the parking lot, Crump said the man went for a gun in his waistband. Several officers opened fire and the suspect was shot.

Police have identified him as Chuckie Stowers, 39.

The man was rushed to the hospital and later died.

Clothes and a handgun could be seen in the parking lot.

The store was shut down for the remainder of the day Saturday as investigators combed the parking lot for evidence.

Across the Valley, in the city of Surprise, Joel Byne, 52, was also shot by police officers.

A spokesman for the Surprise Police Department said officers were called to the 15000 block of West Aster Drive around noon on Saturday for a report of a man wanting to commit suicide.

Byne also made comments to police that he was going to get them to shoot him, according to Surprise police spokesman Sgt. Mike Donovan.

Officers negotiated with Byne for a period of time and then attempted to use a less lethal device to stop him from hurting himself or others.

As less lethal rounds were fired at Byne, he pointed the rifle he was holding at officers, according to Donovan. Byne was then shot by police. He died at a local hospital.

Both shootings are under investigation.
