PHOENIX – Phoenix police are asking for the public's help as they investigate a case of animal cruelty that left a puppy with mutilated ears.
Police said a man was walking his pit bull puppy, Brooke, in the area of 26th Street and McDowell Road on Sept. 16 when he met the unknown suspect, who was walking a full-size brown pit bull with a white chest and disfigured ears.
According to Phoenix police Sgt. Darren Burch, the suspect offered to "crop" the puppy's ears, but instead mutilated them by cutting off the entire ear flaps with scissors and a box cutter.
Burch said the procedure placed the puppy at risk for hearing loss, hemorrhage, cranial infection, permanent disfigurement and protracted suffering.
The suspect is described as a Hispanic male, possibly named Robert or Roberto, 30 to 35 years old, bald with a goatee, skull tattoos on each side of his head and three dots tattooed near his left eye.
The puppy's owner worked with investigators to create a sketch of the suspect.
A reward of up to $1,000 is being offered for information leading to the arrest and/or indictment of the suspect. Contact Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS or silentwitness.org.
