PHOENIX -- Former WNBA star and Australian Olympian Sandy Brondello is taking over as head coach for your two-time WNBA Champion Phoenix Mercury.
The team made the announcement in November. Brondello, who has been a coach in the WNBA for nine years, is the ninth head coach in franchise history. Before joining the coaching ranks, she played in the league for five years.
Brondello, a mother of two, stopped by the 3TV back-lot basketball court Friday morning to chat with "Good Morning Arizona" sporty mom Gina Maravilla.
The four-time Olympian and two-time silver medalist has worked with some members of the Mercury before. She played with fellow Aussie and Mercury forward Penny Taylor on the Australian National Team and she coached Diana Taurasi when the fan favorite played in the Russian League during the WNBA off season.
"Having played for Sandy overseas I know the dedication and passion she will bring to the Phoenix Mercury," Taurasi said. "We are all excited for the future."
Your Mercury take on the Seattle Storm, Brondello's former team, in the team's home opener on May 17. Tip off is at 7 p.m.
In addition, the Phoenix Mercury -- one of the original WNBA teams and two-time league champions -- will host the Boost Mobile All-Star 2014 at US Airways Center this summer.
The game is scheduled for July 19.
