TEMPE, Ariz. -- A man is recovering after he was shot while trying to intervene in a fight between another man and a woman.

It happened shortly after 8 p.m. Sunday in the neighborhood of McClintock Drive and Elliot Road in Tempe.

It started with a man and a woman arguing in front of a home.

The victim heard the pair fighting and inserted himself into the situation, trying to put a stop to it.

Police say that's when the male, now identified as Jeremy Cartwright, pulled out a gun and shot the victim in the leg. Cartwright, 21, ran away, but officers found him hiding in a nearby home less than an hour later.

He was booked into jail for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

It's not clear if the victim was acquainted with either Cartwright or the woman.

Police have not released the names of the victim or the woman who reportedly was arguing with Cartwright.

The victim is expected to recover.
