PHOENIX -- A Valley man was arrested this weekend after he crashed into a light rail train while allegedly driving impaired.

Phoenix police said they responded to the intersection of Central Avenue and Van Buren just before 9 p.m. on Saturday after receiving word of a collision.

After arriving on scene, police said they learned that Guadalupe Cobos Jr., 38, had been traveling east on Van Buren when he failed to stop for a red light and struck the train.

Cobos reportedly fled the scene on foot, and was chased by several people who had been waiting for the train.

The group eventually lost sight of Cobos, but an Arizona State University police officer was able to locate and detain Cobos until Phoenix police arrived.

According to police, Cobos showed signs of impairment. He was subsequently booked into jail on charges of aggravated DUI and leaving the scene of an injury collision.

Police said the light rail train was full at the time of the collision because the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Arizona Rattlers had just recently concluded games.

Four passengers aboard the train complained of pain and were taken to a local hospital as a precaution.

The light rail train and Cobos’ SUV both suffered extensive damage in the crash.
