PHOENIX -- Veterans Memorial Coliseum at the State Fairgrounds has gone to the dogs….and cats.

The arena has been turned into an animal shelter this weekend as PetSmart Charities works to find homes for hundreds of Valley animals.

Billie Winegard is one of the many people who stopped by the event on Saturday, and said she’s always enjoyed the bond that animals can provide.

“It’s a lot about companionship, having somebody to come home to, somebody to cuddle up on the couch while you’re watching TV or reading together,” said Winegard.

This weekend’s event is hoping to find a home for 600 animals.

If you couldn’t make it down to Veterans Memorial Coliseum on Saturday, the event will continue Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
