GLOBE, Ariz. -- An eastern Arizona community is in shock after a woman was killed during a call to 9-1-1.

Globe resident Jane Eck was fatally shot last Friday night in what police believe may have been a burglary gone wrong.

According to the Gila County Sheriff’s Office, 42-year-old Scott Laman drove up to Eck’s home Friday night but then left. He returned a short time later and began shooting at the home.

Police said Eck’s husband fired back at Laman, but Laman was able to get away. Unfortunately, one of his bullets fatally struck Eck.

Eck, 60, had been a director at the Globe Active Adult Center since 2010, and was loved by many throughout the community.

“It’s just hard to believe that something so vicious would happen to such a wonderful woman,” said friend Barbara Nancarrow.

Laman was arrested shortly after the shooting and was taken into custody on charges that include second-degree murder.

The case remains under investigation.
